Maybelline: The Nudes | Review & Swatches

Friday, July 11, 2014

After seeing all over the beauty community that Maybelline was launching there new The Nudes palette I knew that it was definitely something that I was going to be purchasing! I have a few Maybelline quads and trios and they do preform very well so I knew that this larger palette would be perfect in my collection for not only everyday use but for travel and doing makeup on others. I did look up reviews and swatches before I purchased this palette so I knew what to expect to an extend but I was a little disappointed with the overall shadow quality of this palette.

As you can see this palette contains 12 neutral toned eyeshadows with a mixture of warm tones; the palette is divided up into sections the first four shadows are a quad, the second set of four are a quad and the third set. They are also divided into trios = the first three shadows in the top row are a trio and then the second three and so forth and so on ~ this is shown on the back of the palette as well. Then the palette is also divided into duos (harder to explain but also shown on the back of the palette for ease of use)!

I really thought this palette was going to be great because it came with so many matte crease shades, shimmer highlighter shades and matte blacks and dark browns so easily create more smokey looks and although you can create many different looks with this the quality of the shadows just aren't what I expected. Most of the matte shadows in this palette are very dry and hard to swatch (as see below) I do feel they work slightly better with a damp brush or just a brush in general. The shimmery lighter shades have zero pigmentation compared to my ivory (fair) skin tone, I was very disappointed with these shades the most, because I do tend to go through lighter shades faster because I use them all over my lid. I do find with a base however (like the Maybelline Color Tattoos) they do preform better but I am getting much more pigmented from the base showing through then from the actual shadows themselves.

I did however like most of the darker brown shades in the palette, I though they were smooth enough to swatch and get good pigmentation but also applied easily to the eyes and made for great blending to create more subtle looks. The only other disappointing shadow for me was the black ~ I'm so used to using Blackout from the Naked 2 palette that whenever there is black in a palette it just doesn't compare. Unfortunatly in this palette the black has little pigmentation and comes out more of a dark gunmetal grey, but is also very patchy. I also find that this is the only shadow that does not transfer well onto my eyes, I find that it still is patchy when blended onto my eyes and its really hard to fix once its in place.

I know that's been a lot of talking and rambling but I really wanted to give you guys a good idea of how I felt about the palette ~ I'm not sure it it was worth the $11 price tag but it is something that is easy to use and I love that its broken down into several categories of looks so if you are new to makeup you can easily chose a look and create it. I also am a big fan of Maybelline's packaging, I feel like its very high quality for being a drugstore and affordable brand.

Have you tried this palette? What are your thoughts?

  2. Thanks for the review, I was seriously thinking about picking one up. I might have to stick with my Naked palettes instead. :)

    1. The Naked Palette's are a thousand times better, in all honestly they both have very similar shades and I still tend to reach for the Naked 2 Palette more than this cause it also has a mixture of warm and cool tones!

  3. Lovely review! Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I was thinking about picking one up but there isn't a shade that is sticking out to me but it looks like a great everyday neutrals palette.

    1. None of the shades are really special to me either, I do love larger drugstore palettes though because they do always have something to offer and I really like the price and quality of the packaging of the product, but I also love the shimmery buttery soft shades in the palette.
